Record-Breaking Viewership Marks ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Opening
Spectacular Opening with Unprecedented Attendance
Jay Shah, the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), praised the remarkable commencement of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, noting that it has set new records for attendance and viewership. In a message shared on X, he revealed that approximately 45,000 spectators attended the matches during the inaugural weekend, marking it as the largest opening for any ICC women's tournament.
Shah highlighted that the match between India and Pakistan on Sunday garnered over 25 million unique viewers on JioHotstar in India. Additionally, Sky Sports achieved its highest-ever viewership for a Women's T20 World Cup match in the UK.
"It's a blockbuster start to the @ICC #WT20WorldCup 2026. The opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) saw nearly 45,000 fans across #Birmingham, #Manchester, and #Southampton. This is the largest opening weekend for an ICC women's event. The live digital viewership in India for #IndvPak on @JioHotstar surpassed 25 million unique users, exceeding the total viewership for the last WT20WC edition," he stated.
"Peak viewership in the UK on #SkySports was the highest ever for any WT20WC match. The women's cricket movement is rewriting history from its very first weekend across India, the UK, and globally," he added in his post on X.
Exciting Early Matches and Surprising Outcomes
So far, the tournament has seen eight matches, including a few surprising results, particularly for the defending champions, New Zealand. The White Ferns faced a seven-wicket defeat against the West Indies and subsequently lost by five wickets to Sri Lanka.
India has played one match in the tournament, triumphing over their rivals Pakistan by 64 runs. Currently, the Indian women's team holds the second position in Group A, trailing only Australia.
