Péter Magyar Triumphs in Hungary's 2026 General Election
Election Results and Concession
Péter Magyar has emerged victorious in the 2026 general elections in Hungary, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán officially acknowledging his defeat. Magyar announced on Facebook that Orbán had reached out to congratulate him on the win, indicating a sense of assurance from the opposition. Although there was no immediate confirmation from Orbán's camp, he has since publicly recognized the election results.
In a concise address, Orbán described the election outcome as significant, stating it was 'painful for us, but clear.' He remarked, 'The responsibility for and the opportunity to govern were not given to us,' while extending his congratulations to Magyar's Tisza party for their success.
With 53.45% of the votes tallied, Tisza is leading with 136 seats, while Fidesz-KDNP has secured 56 seats and Mi Hazánk Mozgalom has 7. Earlier estimates, with approximately 37% of votes counted, also indicated Tisza's strong position, projecting 132 seats against Fidesz's 59 and Mi Hazánk's 8.
Magyar expressed his gratitude with a brief message: 'Thank you, Hungary!' Orbán, addressing his supporters, acknowledged the '2.5 million people' who cast their votes for Fidesz and promised to 'never let them down.' Reflecting on his lengthy tenure, he noted, 'We have experienced difficult and easy, beautiful and sad years,' but affirmed his determination to 'never, never, never give up.'
He outlined the party's future plans, stating, 'We will serve our country and the Hungarian nation from the opposition.' Emphasizing resilience, Orbán added, 'We don’t have the weight of governing the country, so we have to rebuild our communities.' In a resolute tone, he told his supporters, 'We never give up; this is one thing people know about us, we never give up,' and remarked that 'the days ahead of us are for us to heal our wounds.'
This election result signifies the conclusion of Orbán's 19-year tenure as Hungary's Prime Minister.
