Prime Minister Modi Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Scholar Robert A. F. Thurman

New Delhi, June 18: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the passing of Padma Shri awardee Robert A. F. Thurman, describing him as an "eminent scholar of Buddhism, a distinguished teacher, and a lifelong friend of India."
In a heartfelt message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister noted, "Thurman played a significant role in popularizing Buddhist philosophy worldwide and fostering understanding between diverse cultures."
PM Modi reflected on their meeting in New York City a few years back, stating, "I fondly recall our excellent conversation. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers during this difficult time."
Professor Robert A. F. Thurman, a prominent figure in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and a close associate of the Dalai Lama, passed away at the age of 84, as reported by Tibet House US on Wednesday.
In their announcement, Tibet House US shared, "We are deeply saddened to inform you that Robert A.F. Thurman, a distinguished American Buddhist scholar and co-founder of Tibet House US, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 16, in Woodstock, New York."
The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.
During a meeting on June 21, 2023, in New York, PM Modi and Prof Thurman discussed how Buddhist principles could provide guidance in addressing global issues, as well as India's commitment to preserving its Buddhist heritage.
The Consulate General of India in New York also expressed their condolences, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Robert Thurman, a leading scholar of Buddhism and a great friend of India. His lifelong commitment to Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies has helped share the wisdom of Lord Buddha with generations worldwide, enhancing appreciation for India's spiritual legacy."
According to the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) based in Himachal Pradesh, Prof Thurman authored, edited, and translated numerous works on Tibetan Buddhism.
As the father of actress Uma Thurman, he held the position of Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and served as president of both Tibet House US and the American Institute of Buddhist Studies. He is known for translating the Vimalakirti Sutra from Tibetan Kagyur into English.
Prof Thurman gained recognition for his translations and interpretations of Tibetan Buddhist texts and was named one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997. In 2006, New York Magazine recognized him as one of the "Influentials" in the field of religion.
