New Delhi, Oct 26: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva following his impressive win in Brazil's presidential re-election. Modi expressed optimism about enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Brazil.
In the recent presidential runoff, Lula, the current President of Brazil, achieved a comeback victory against Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party, who had initially led in the first round, thus securing a fourth term in office.
PM Modi took to social media platform X to share his sentiments, stating, "My warmest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory. I am eager to collaborate closely with him to deepen and expand the multifaceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership."
He further emphasized, "Together, we will enhance our cooperation across various sectors, promote the shared goals of the Global South, and strive for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world."
Lula is set to be inaugurated on January 5, 2027, marking the beginning of his four-year term as Brazil's President.
With nearly all votes counted, Lula garnered 51.78% of the valid votes, while Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.23%, according to official results. This victory is particularly notable as Lula had been trailing in the first round, successfully preventing a rightward shift in Latin America supported by former US President Donald Trump.
As he prepares to govern from 2027 to 2030, Lula will face a Congress where Bolsonaro's Liberal Party holds significant power and will need to address the country's public debt.
PM Modi and Lula last met in February during Lula's State Visit to India, where they engaged in comprehensive discussions on critical minerals, digital cooperation, traditional knowledge, health, MSMEs, entrepreneurship, and mass communication.
Lula also attended the 2nd AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi. Notably, he had to miss the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit in September due to his re-election campaign.
