Pipeline Explosion Triggers Evacuations in St. Helena Parish
Pipeline Blast Leads to Urgent Evacuations
On Saturday, emergency services in St. Helena Parish initiated evacuation orders following a significant pipeline explosion in the southwestern region. Residents reported feeling tremors from the blast, which occurred on Nesom Road, situated between Pine Grove in St. Helena Parish and Watson in the adjacent Livingston Parish, as confirmed by local law enforcement.
Witnesses near the explosion site shared their experiences. Donald Fry, a resident located approximately a quarter-mile away, described the incident: “My whole house shook as if a bomb had detonated. We’re evacuating to avoid any potential gas leak.” Others living further away also felt the effects; Carey Dover, who resides about 10 miles from the explosion, remarked, “I heard the boom, and it rattled my floors and windows. I’m roughly 12 to 15 miles away as the crow flies.” He promptly contacted the sheriff’s office to report the incident, believing it was a pipeline explosion near his property.
Local fire departments, including the Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department and St. Helena Fire District No. 5, advised residents in the vicinity to evacuate. In a social media update, they stated: “Major pipeline explosion west of Pine Grove around Nesom Rd. Evacuations are in progress.” Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. However, residents noted that approximately 20 minutes post-explosion, the pipeline seemed to still be leaking. Fry described the sound as resembling a jet engine as he departed the area.
