Diplomatic Dialogue Between Pakistan and Iran

In light of escalating regional tensions, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in discussions with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian. However, the lack of mention regarding ongoing or potential negotiations has sparked curiosity about the future of diplomatic relations. This conversation occurs amidst reports of mediation efforts, making the absence of negotiation details particularly striking.

During the 45-minute call, Sharif expressed gratitude to Pezeshkian for sending a significant delegation to Islamabad for discussions with the United States last week. Despite this, the official summary of their conversation did not provide any insights into when further negotiations might take place.

As US President Donald Trump announced a delegation's upcoming visit to Islamabad for a second round of talks, Iran has refuted claims about these negotiations, labeling them as inaccurate. In their dialogue, PM Sharif also highlighted his recent interactions with various global leaders, including those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The two leaders engaged in a cordial exchange, focusing on the current regional dynamics. Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to fostering peace and security in the region with the help of its allies. Pezeshkian acknowledged Pakistan's dedication to peace efforts and expressed optimism about strengthening Iran-Pakistan relations moving forward.

Previously, the US and Iran had rare direct discussions in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, aimed at resolving their ongoing conflict, but these talks ended without a consensus. Trump's announcement of renewed talks has raised hopes for extending a ceasefire that is set to expire soon. Reports indicate that both the foreign minister and prime minister of Pakistan have reached out to their Iranian counterparts to encourage participation in the next negotiation round, with Iran's Supreme National Security Council also convening to deliberate on the matter.
