Dhubri, January 10: Authorities have initiated an investigation after the body of a newborn was found floating in the Brahmaputra River near Jogamaya Ghat in Dhubri on Saturday.
Initial reports suggest that the infant may have been born at a medical facility before being discarded into the river.
The grim discovery was made by local residents who spotted the body and promptly notified the Dhubri Police.
Upon receiving the alert, a police team quickly arrived at the scene and recovered the infant's body from the water, according to officials.
The remains were subsequently transported to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital for a medico-legal examination to ascertain the cause and time of death.
The officer-in-charge of Dhubri Police Station confirmed the recovery and stated that an investigation is underway to identify the woman involved and to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.
“We will provide more information once the investigation progresses,” the official remarked.
The incident has drawn a crowd of local residents to the riverbank, many of whom expressed their shock and sorrow over the situation.
Some community members speculated that a woman might be responsible for the act and raised concerns about the abandonment of the newborn.
Police are currently reviewing hospital records, CCTV footage, and other evidence to determine if the delivery occurred at a healthcare facility and to identify those accountable.
Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid in the investigation as the case develops.
