New DNA Evidence in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance Case Raises Hopes
Significant Developments in the Search for Nancy Guthrie
A genetic genealogist has indicated that recently analyzed DNA evidence may play a pivotal role in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie. The 84-year-old was last seen at her residence in Arizona on January 31 and was reported missing the next day. Authorities suspect she may have been kidnapped, as traces of her blood were discovered on her front porch. Reports from various media outlets reveal that the FBI is currently examining DNA evidence from her home, which includes hair samples. Genetic genealogist CeCe Moore expressed optimism about this development, stating, "Hair can definitely help solve the case, so I'm quite hopeful." Since the investigation began, officials have voiced concerns regarding Guthrie's health due to her need for daily medication. Additionally, investigators have received ransom notes sent to several media organizations following her disappearance.
Last month, the FBI released surveillance footage showing a masked individual on Guthrie's porch on the night she vanished. This person, described as a suspect, is believed to be of average build, standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, and was seen carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. Moore noted that DNA from hair could be especially useful in cases where other evidence is scarce. "Hair can open up many cases that lack other DNA evidence," she explained. The effectiveness of the sample will depend on its source. "If they have a rootless hair from the kidnapper, it could be the key piece of evidence that solves the case," she added. However, she cautioned against raising expectations too high, stating, "I don't want to get everyone's hopes up too much because we've encountered many obstacles, but this is the first positive news I've heard in a while."
The Pima County Sheriff's Department has been collaborating with the FBI since the investigation's inception and emphasized that DNA analysis is still in progress. "This is not new information. The private lab we work with in Florida continues to communicate with the FBI lab and other partner labs nationwide. DNA analysis is ongoing," the department stated on X. Moore mentioned that analyzing rootless hair samples could take several months. Meanwhile, Guthrie's family has announced a $1 million reward for information leading to her safe return, along with an additional reward exceeding $200,000 for information that could result in the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
