Nepal's Press Council Raises Alarm Over YouTuber's Interview with Flood Survivors

Concerns Over Interview with Flood Victims

Kathmandu: The Press Council of Nepal has voiced its apprehension regarding an interview conducted by a YouTuber with flood survivors who are currently receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit of a Kathmandu hospital located in the Chhauni area.

On Monday, the council released a statement highlighting its awareness of a segment aired by the YouTube channel 'Inside the Bunker', which featured interviews with individuals rescued after enduring ten days trapped at the Trishuli III 'A' Hydropower Project site in Rasuwa.

These survivors were hospitalized and receiving treatment in the ICU following their rescue.

The interview was conducted by YouTuber and journalist Suraj Singh Thakuri along with his filming crew, and it has faced backlash from local media and social media users.

The Press Council is currently reviewing the content to ensure it aligns with the Journalists' Code of Conduct.

Deepak Khanal, a senior official at the Press Council, mentioned that they have reached out to the Medical Council and the relevant hospital regarding this matter.

Additionally, the council is investigating whether the YouTuber holds a valid press accreditation card.

The flash floods, caused by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, have wreaked havoc in northern and central Nepal, resulting in approximately 1,400 fatalities, with over 5,000 individuals still unaccounted for. The Bhotekoshi River, which flows southward from the Himalayan border, carried the floodwaters downstream, destroying homes, vehicles, roads, and bridges, and severely impacting hydropower projects.
