Narges Mohammadi's Health Deteriorates After Hospital Transfer
Critical Condition of Narges Mohammadi
Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is currently in a serious condition after being moved from prison to a hospital just two days ago. Her family’s foundation has expressed deep concern regarding her health status. Presently, she is receiving care in a cardiac unit located in Zanjan, where medical staff are primarily focused on stabilizing her condition through oxygen therapy, as her blood pressure remains dangerously unstable.
Circumstances Leading to Hospitalization
On Friday, Mohammadi was transferred to the hospital following a significant decline in her health, which her foundation described as catastrophic. Reports indicate that she lost consciousness on two occasions and experienced a severe cardiac episode prior to her transfer. This alarming situation was not entirely unexpected, as her family had previously indicated that she may have suffered a heart attack as early as late March. On Sunday, the foundation reiterated that proper treatment could only be ensured if she was allowed to be treated by her own medical team in Tehran, but as of that day, no transfer had occurred.
Background on Narges Mohammadi
In her 50s, Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while incarcerated, recognized for her advocacy for women's rights and her efforts to abolish the death penalty in Iran. She was re-arrested in December of the previous year after making statements at a memorial for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, whose death she had publicly criticized. Iranian prosecutor Hasan Hematifar accused her of making inflammatory comments during the event. In February, shortly before the onset of conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation disclosed that she had received a new prison sentence of seven and a half years, prompting the Nobel committee to demand her immediate release.
Future Prospects
Currently, Mohammadi remains in critical condition in the cardiac unit in Zanjan. Her foundation has emphasized that the facility lacks the necessary resources to provide adequate care, intensifying the urgency for her transfer to Tehran. As of now, there has been no official response from Iranian authorities regarding this request.
