Mojtaba Khamenei's Prospects After His Father's Death

Mojtaba Khamenei, the prominent son of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, is reported to be alive and is considered a strong candidate to take over his father's position, according to two Iranian sources who spoke to Reuters on Wednesday. Ali Khamenei, aged 86, was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his residence in Tehran, marking a historic event as it is the first instance of a nation's top leader being assassinated in such a manner. The attack also resulted in the deaths of his wife, another son, and several high-ranking military and political officials, as per Iranian reports.

Sources indicated that Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was not present in Tehran at the time of the strike that devastated the compound. Later on Wednesday, large gatherings of mourners were anticipated in Tehran as preparations were made for the late leader's body to lie in state at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall, named after the founder of the Islamic Republic and Iran's inaugural supreme leader.

The Assembly of Experts, the clerical body tasked with selecting the supreme leader, is expected to announce a successor shortly. Assembly member Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami stated on state television, "The Supreme Leader will be identified at the earliest opportunity; we are nearing a conclusion. However, the current situation in the country resembles a war situation." He mentioned that potential candidates have already been identified but refrained from naming them.

Mojtaba Khamenei is widely regarded as the leading candidate. Over the years, he has cultivated significant influence within Iran's security sectors and its robust economic networks. Analysts suggest that his selection would indicate that hardliners maintain a strong grip on power. Another potential candidate is Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Ruhollah Khomeini, who is linked to the more reformist faction of the Iranian establishment.

Israel has indicated its intention to persist in targeting Iran's leadership. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz remarked, "Any leader appointed by the Iranian terror regime to continue and lead the plan to destroy Israel, threaten the United States and the free world, and suppress the Iranian populace will be an unequivocal target for elimination, regardless of their name or location." Meanwhile, tensions have escalated, with the United States and Israel conducting strikes on Iranian positions, while Tehran has retaliated with missile attacks.
