Modi and Trump Discuss Middle East Tensions in Recent Call
Leaders Connect Amidst Rising Regional Tensions
On Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a 40-minute phone call with US President Donald Trump, centering on the escalating situation in the Middle East. This conversation occurs against a backdrop of increasing tensions involving Iran and the United States, raising global concerns regarding energy security and the stability of crucial maritime routes. US envoy Sergio Gor reported that Trump expressed his affection for Modi, stating, "I just want you to know we all love you: Trump tells PM Modi." He emphasized that the relationship between India and the US is robust.
This conversation marks the third time this year that Modi and Trump have spoken, and it is their second discussion since the conflict in West Asia intensified following US-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28. Their initial conversation took place on February 2, where they discussed advancements on a trade agreement, followed by another call on March 24 to address the escalating tensions in West Asia. Currently, the conflict remains at a standstill after recent talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, did not result in any significant progress. Both parties are maintaining their positions, even as a fragile ceasefire, which is expected to last until April 22, is still in effect.
