Missile Attack on Dimona

On Saturday evening, a missile launched from Iran hit the southern Israeli town of Dimona, resulting in injuries to at least 47 individuals. This town is well-known for its distinctive dome-shaped nuclear facility and is affectionately referred to as "Little India". According to rescue services, a 12-year-old boy is in critical condition due to shrapnel wounds, while a woman in her thirties sustained moderate injuries from glass shards. Additionally, 31 others experienced minor injuries from shrapnel or were hurt while rushing to safety.

Rescue teams reported that 14 individuals were treated for severe anxiety at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. The missile struck a community building, causing some older homes to collapse. Fortunately, many residents were in shelters at the time, which minimized the extent of injuries, except for the young boy who was outside during the attack.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are currently looking into why the missile was not intercepted. They stated that their air defense systems attempted to engage the missile, but the interceptors failed to neutralize it. An investigation into the incident is underway.

In response to the missile strike, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has urged for maximum military restraint. The agency acknowledged the missile impact in Dimona but reported no damage to the Negev nuclear research center.

Iran claimed that the attack on Dimona was a retaliation for a prior strike on its Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, although the IDF denied any involvement in that earlier incident. Dimona is home to a significant Indian-Jewish community, primarily from Maharashtra, which has fostered strong ties with India, earning the town its nickname. The local culture is vibrant, with Indian shops and a population of around 7,500 Indians, making up about 30% of Dimona's residents. Cricket is a favored sport, and local Indian snacks are widely available.
