Tampa (US), Nov 7: Authorities reported that Thomas Markle Sr., the 82-year-old estranged father of Meghan Markle, was taken into custody on Friday at a senior living facility in Florida. He faces allegations of possessing child sexual abuse material stored in California.

According to footage shared by a British tabloid, Markle was seen in a wheelchair, handcuffed, and being transported by ambulance with federal agents.

The arrest came after law enforcement seized around 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books, believed to contain images of child sexual abuse from storage units in the Los Angeles area, as stated by First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli.

Some of the images reportedly show Markle with children, according to an FBI affidavit submitted in court.

Essayli emphasized the gravity of the allegations, stating, "These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr. Markle to the fullest extent of federal law."

Attempts to reach Markle's court-appointed attorney for comments were unsuccessful. Following his arrest in Polk County, Markle appeared in federal court in Tampa and was released back to a senior care facility under electronic monitoring.

US Magistrate Judge Lindsay Griffin mandated a psychiatric evaluation, expressing concerns that Markle might not fully comprehend the legal proceedings or adequately assist his attorney.

Future court hearings are expected to shift to California, although this may take several weeks, according to the US Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.

Investigation Background

Markle's arrest was prompted by reports from another British tabloid, which indicated that Meghan's half-brother discovered a collection of child sexual abuse images while clearing out their father's residence in the Philippines. This led to the identification of two US storage units in Los Angeles that Markle has rented since 2008.

Essayli informed the Associated Press that, based on the seized materials, there is currently no evidence of victims in the US, but the investigation remains active.

Earlier this year, Markle was residing in the Philippines when he suffered a stroke and had his left leg amputated, necessitating his return to the US.

According to reports, Thomas Markle Jr. found "hundreds, if not thousands" of child sexual abuse images in boxes at their father's home in Cebu City. He reported these findings to the police in the Philippines and contacted the FBI.

Markle Jr. stated, "I have supported, cared for him and helped him for years - but that stops now. I won't speak to my father ever again unless I'm called to give evidence against him."

Meghan Markle's Response

Meghan Markle, who gained fame as an actress in the US television series "Suits," married Prince Harry in 2018 at Windsor Castle. They share two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

She expressed being "deeply distressed" by the allegations surrounding the discovery of child sexual abuse images at her father's former residence. Meghan also mentioned that a letter containing "troubling allegations" about him was sent to police in London back in 2019.

Meghan stated, "It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father, and I was given assurances that these were being investigated. I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications' distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them."

No immediate comments were made by Meghan's representative regarding the arrest, and Buckingham Palace is not anticipated to issue a statement.

Although Harry is the second son of King Charles III, he and Meghan are no longer active members of the royal family, having stepped back from royal duties when they relocated to California in 2020. After their return to the UK in August, Charles confirmed that their status remains unchanged.

Thomas Markle Sr., a retired lighting and photography director, has never established a relationship with Meghan's in-laws and did not attend her wedding due to a scandal involving staged photos with a British tabloid. Their estrangement has persisted since then.
