Massive Multi-Vehicle Pileup Closes I-70 in Colorado Amid Severe Weather
Major Accident on Interstate 70
On Tuesday, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Colorado were shut down due to a significant multi-vehicle accident involving over 75 cars and trucks, according to officials. The incident took place just before 3 PM local time near the Highway 6 on-ramp in Clear Creek County. Many vehicles were severely damaged, with some losing control on the snow-covered road.
The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office indicated that the crash's severity was exacerbated by rapidly worsening weather conditions. A sudden snowstorm accompanied by strong winds created perilous driving situations in the central mountainous area. Wind gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph (48 to 56 km/h) resulted in blowing snow and drastically reduced visibility, creating near white-out conditions.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the Colorado Department of Transportation closed the eastbound lanes at the Eisenhower Tunnel to facilitate rescue and cleanup efforts. Officials have cautioned that the closure may last for an extended duration. The extent of injuries from the crash remains unclear. The accident occurred near the Loveland Ski Area, which is still operational, while Highway 6 over Loveland Pass has been reported as open.
In other parts of Colorado's mountainous regions, adverse weather conditions led to further incidents. The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed on Vail Pass due to another multi-vehicle accident, and a separate crash on Berthoud Pass resulted in the closure of Highway 40 near Winter Park. Authorities are advising drivers to remain vigilant as winter weather continues to impact road safety across the area.
