Wildfire Situation in Utah

In Utah, mandatory evacuations have been enforced in parts of Tooele and Juab counties due to the rapid spread of the Maple Peak Fire, which has merged with the Cherry Fire, resulting in a massive blaze that now spans nearly 20,000 acres. Fire officials have confirmed that the combined fire will continue to be referred to as the Cherry Fire. According to Toby Weed, a Public Information Officer for Iron Fire, the two fires converged as strong winds and dry conditions exacerbated the fire's growth in the area.

Evacuation orders have been issued for the Vernon Reservoir and Lofgreen regions in Tooele County, as flames pose a significant threat to nearby communities. Local residents reported witnessing thick smoke and flames rapidly advancing across Highway 36. "We saw the fire cross Highway 36 and move toward homes across the road. It looked like a huge wall of smoke coming straight at us," shared Lofgreen residents Rebecca and Jared Richardson.

Evacuations Extend in Juab County

Immediate evacuations have also been mandated for the towns of Eureka, Mammoth, and Silver City. Residents are advised to head east on Highway 6, with an emergency shelter set up at the Elberta church. The Tooele County Sheriff's Office has designated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vernon as an evacuation center for those in areas under a 'GO' status.

Road Closures and Ongoing Fire Activity

Due to intense wildfire activity associated with the nearby Highway Fire, authorities have closed State Route 36 between SR-6 and the Juab-Tooele county line. Drivers are urged to steer clear of the area and heed instructions from emergency personnel. The Highway Fire remains active near the southwest side of SR-36, complicating firefighting efforts.

State of Emergency Declared

Officials in Utah County have declared a State of Emergency as multiple wildfires continue to burn throughout the region. Commissioner Skyler Beltran stated that this declaration will enable the county to access additional resources to assist firefighters in managing the escalating emergencies. Emergency resources were already stretched thin due to the ongoing Iron Fire before the Maple Peak and Cherry fires merged and began encroaching on the same area. Fire crews are actively combating several wildfires across Tooele and Juab counties, while authorities caution that changing weather conditions could heighten fire risks. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to all evacuation orders as firefighting operations progress.
