Maine Senate Candidate Faces Sexual Assault Allegations
Allegations Against Graham Platner
Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old resident of Maine, has come forward with serious allegations against Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate. She claims that Platner sexually assaulted her during an incident in late 2021, which he has vehemently denied. Racicot shared with a news outlet that she had a tumultuous relationship with Platner for over two years after they met on the dating app Bumble in 2019. She alleges that the assault took place when Platner entered her home uninvited while heavily intoxicated.
Racicot recounted that she repeatedly asked him to stop, but he persisted. “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful,” she stated. “At one point, I realized that this was no longer my choice.” She claimed that after moving to another room, Platner followed her and had sex with her against her will, disregarding her request regarding birth control.
The following morning, Racicot said Platner claimed he had no memory of the events. She asked him to leave and later messaged him on Instagram, stating that the encounter was non-consensual and requested he not contact her again. Racicot did not report the incident to authorities due to feelings of shock and fear of retaliation, opting instead to confide in her therapist. She provided emails and messages to support her claims.
Racicot decided to speak out now, feeling that previous allegations against Platner focused more on another woman, Lyndsey Fifield. “I struggled with the moral conflict of supporting his politics but not him as a person,” she explained. “I want the truth to be known about who he really is.”
Platner's Response to the Allegations
Platner Denies Racicot's Claims
In response to Racicot's allegations, Platner has categorically denied any wrongdoing. He described the claims as troubling and false, asserting that any accusation of non-consensual behavior is entirely untrue. His campaign suggested that these allegations are part of a coordinated attack by political adversaries as election deadlines approach.
His campaign stated, “These allegations are serious, and Graham vigorously denies them. They are also coached and coordinated by out-of-state establishment operatives.” They further claimed that previous accusations labeling him as a 'Nazi' or 'war criminal' were also unfounded and that the latest allegations are merely attempts to undermine his campaign.
Controversies Surrounding Platner's Campaign
Other Issues Affecting Platner's Senate Bid
Platner, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, recently won the Democratic primary in Maine and is set to face Republican Senator Susan Collins. However, his campaign has been marred by various controversies. Reports have highlighted offensive comments made online and previous allegations of mistreatment towards women, including claims from Lyndsey Fifield, who has stood by her accusations.
Additionally, Platner has faced criticism for a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, which he covered up last fall, claiming he was unaware of its meaning. In past interviews, he has denied any physical mistreatment of women, attributing some of his past behavior to mental health issues and alcohol abuse, while asserting that he has changed.
Racicot expressed her concern over Platner's public denials, stating, “I know he is capable of putting his hands on women, so I don’t believe that to be the truth.”
