Lovlina Borgohain, who earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, faced disappointment once again as she finished with a silver medal in the women's 75kg boxing category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She lost a tightly contested final to Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree on Saturday.

The match was characterized by a cautious strategy from both competitors, who were careful to look for openings instead of engaging in extended exchanges. As the final minute approached, Greentree increased her offensive efforts, but Lovlina adeptly evaded her attacks and landed several effective punches. At the conclusion of the bout, both fighters raised their hands, confident in their performance. However, after a suspenseful wait, the judges awarded the victory to Greentree with a 4-1 split decision, adding a silver medal to Lovlina's impressive international accolades.

A Significant Achievement

This result signifies yet another near miss for the boxer from Assam, who aimed to break her Commonwealth Games medal drought in Glasgow. Previously, Lovlina had faced early exits, finishing in the quarterfinals at Gold Coast 2018 and being eliminated in the first round at Birmingham 2022. This time, she not only secured her first Commonwealth Games medal but also came close to winning gold. The 28-year-old advanced to the final after receiving a direct semifinal berth and achieving a commanding 5-0 victory over Tarona Taafaki from Tuvalu.

A Celebrated Career

Recognized as one of India's top boxers, Lovlina made history by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the third Indian boxer to achieve an Olympic podium finish. She is also a former world champion and an Arjuna Award recipient, having claimed gold at the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad in 2025. Outside the boxing ring, she serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for the Assam Government.

India's Remarkable Boxing Performance

Despite Lovlina's setback, India's boxing team has delivered its most successful Commonwealth Games performance to date. The nation has already secured a record five gold medals, thanks to the efforts of Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, and Arundhati Choudhary. Additionally, Jadumani Singh and Lovlina have contributed silver medals. Overall, India has amassed 35 medals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, comprising 11 gold, 16 silver, and eight bronze, placing them fourth in the medal standings. Australia leads the table with a total of 145 medals, showcasing its dominance in the Games.
