Lightning Strike Injures Golfer and Sparks Brush Fire in Colorado
Incident at Fox Hollow Golf Course
A golfer sustained injuries after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm that also ignited a brush fire at Fox Hollow Golf Course, located near Lakewood, Colorado. This incident prompted a swift emergency response from both firefighters and paramedics. The fire, which was ignited by the lightning strike, scorched approximately two acres before it was brought under control.
According to West Metro Fire Rescue, emergency teams were dispatched to the golf course along Morrison Road following reports of a lightning strike and a slow-moving grass fire. The golfer was hit near the sixth hole and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital. The severity of the injuries has not been disclosed by authorities.

Fire Affects Approximately Two Acres
Upon arrival, firefighters initially assessed the fire's size at about one acre but later updated it to nearly two acres. The flames spread through dry grass, brush, and fallen trees in the rugged terrain adjacent to the golf course. Fortunately, the irrigated fairways and greens helped to contain the fire, preventing it from reaching nearby residences or structures. Fire crews established containment lines and halted the fire's spread before commencing mop-up operations to extinguish any remaining hotspots.
Lightning Ignites the Fire
Fire officials confirmed that the wildfire was triggered by lightning striking dry vegetation near the golf course. This incident serves as a reminder of the increased wildfire risk associated with thunderstorms, especially given Colorado's ongoing dry conditions.

Emergency officials have reiterated that lightning is one of the primary natural causes of wildfires in the western United States. They advise individuals to seek shelter in a sturdy building or a hard-topped vehicle as soon as thunder is heard and to avoid open areas like golf courses during storms.
Arrest Related to Suspected Arson
This incident occurred just a day after deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office apprehended a man suspected of deliberately starting a separate brush fire during Colorado's wildfire season. Royce Ben Jameson, 25, from New Mexico, was arrested after multiple witnesses reported seeing him near a brush fire along Colorado Highway 74 between Idledale and Morrison. Deputies extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher before firefighters completed the suppression efforts. A lighter was later found near the fire's origin. Jameson faces charges of firing woods or prairie and third-degree criminal trespassing.
The lightning-induced fire at Fox Hollow and the alleged arson incident highlight the significant wildfire threat in Colorado, exacerbated by dry vegetation, drought conditions, and summer thunderstorms. Authorities continue to urge residents to report any smoke or suspicious fire activity immediately while adhering to local fire restrictions.
