King Charles III Gifts Historic HMS Trump Bell to President Trump
A Historic Gesture at the White House
During a state dinner at the White House, King Charles III presented a significant gift to President Donald Trump: the original bell from the British submarine HMS Trump. This formal white-tie event, hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, was the first of its kind since 2007. In his speech, King Charles remarked that the bell represents the shared history and promising future of the two nations, humorously adding, “Should you ever need to get hold of us… just give us a ring.” Buckingham Palace characterized this gesture as a “symbol of friendship,” reminiscent of a past royal tradition where Queen Elizabeth II gifted the Liberty Bell during her 1976 visit to the United States. In his toast, Trump referred to the US-UK relationship as a “friendship unlike any other on Earth.” The King also made light of Trump’s controversial East Wing ballroom project, joking about “readjustments” to the White House and referencing the historical event in 1814 when British forces set fire to the building.

All About HMS Trump
The HMS Trump was a British third-group T-class submarine that was launched in 1944 during World War II. Constructed by Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow, it served with the Royal Navy’s 4th Submarine Flotilla in Australia and participated in operations in the Pacific, including patrols in the Java Sea. The submarine was primarily based in Sydney and remained operational after the war, undergoing various refits to enhance its underwater capabilities. It was the only Royal Navy vessel to carry the name “Trump” and continued its service until leaving Australia in 1969, ultimately being scrapped in 1971.
