Karnataka Forest Minister Suspends Officials Over Tiger Deaths

In a significant move, Karnataka's Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has suspended two officials due to their negligence linked to the unnatural deaths of five tigers in the Male Mahadeshwara Hills. The decision follows a preliminary report from a high-level investigation committee, which has also led to the recommendation for further inquiries into the conduct of Deputy Conservator of Forests Y. Chakrapani. The tragic incident, which involved a female tiger and her cubs, has raised serious concerns about wildlife conservation efforts in the region. The minister has mandated the committee to submit a final report by July 10, emphasizing the need for accountability in forest management.
 

Suspension of Officials Following Tiger Deaths

In Karnataka, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has suspended two officials due to negligence and failure to perform their duties related to the unnatural deaths of five tigers in the Male Mahadeshwara (MM) Hills. This information was confirmed by officials.


The minister has also recommended the suspension of Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Y. Chakrapani in connection with this incident. On June 26, a female tiger and her four cubs were discovered dead in the Hugyam range of MM Hills.


Khandre has called for a departmental inquiry into Chakrapani's conduct. Following the incident, three individuals were arrested. The minister's decision came after reviewing the preliminary report submitted by a high-level investigation committee led by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) Kumar Pushkar.


This committee was established to investigate the incident. The minister has instructed the committee to submit its final report by July 10. Khandre's office stated in a release that there is clear evidence of negligence and failure to fulfill duties by the officials, which led to the recommendation for DCF Y. Chakrapani's suspension.


The statement further noted that Assistant Conservator of Forests Gajanan Hegde and the Range Forest Officer of the concerned area, Madesh, have also been suspended for their failure to effectively monitor patrolling staff and for gross negligence in performing their fundamental duties of forest conservation.
