A Glimpse into Inauguration Day

In her recently published memoir, Jill Biden shares insights into an uncomfortable moment during Donald Trump's 2025 inauguration: a shared car ride with Melania Trump. The two women, who had not interacted much over the years, found themselves in the same vehicle, accompanied by John Bessler, husband of Senator Amy Klobuchar. This ride is part of the inauguration tradition where outgoing and incoming presidents travel together, while their spouses take separate cars.

Jill Biden's memoir, titled "View from the East Wing," released on June 2, humorously notes that Bessler likely drew the short straw to be in that car. While the atmosphere in the presidents' vehicle was likely tense, at least Trump and Biden had a history of interaction. In contrast, Jill and Melania had very little prior connection. "This would be one of few interactions Melania and I had ever had," she reflects.

Limited Interactions and Traditions

Their limited history extends beyond that car ride. Following Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election, Donald Trump did not concede and did not extend the customary invitation to the White House. Similarly, Melania Trump did not invite Jill Biden for the traditional tea that typically marks the transition.

When Trump won again in 2024, the Bidens attempted to revive the tradition by inviting the Trumps. While Donald Trump accepted, Melania declined due to a prior engagement. The two women had only briefly crossed paths at the funerals of Rosalynn Carter in 2023 and Jimmy Carter in 2024. Jill Biden also reached out to Melania after Trump survived an assassination attempt, during which Melania was polite and thanked her for the call.

Breaking the Ice

Anticipating an awkward silence during the ride, Jill Biden was surprised when Bessler, a reserved Midwesterner, initiated conversation as soon as the doors closed. He posed questions to both women to keep the dialogue flowing, asking about Barron Trump's experience at New York University. Jill Biden inquired about Melania's father's well-being following her mother's passing.

However, Melania consistently redirected the conversation back to the weather. Jill Biden, picking up on this cue, attempted to shift the topic to the military dogs along the inauguration route, expressing sympathy for them in the cold. Melania replied that Barron had never wanted a dog. Shortly after this exchange, they arrived at the Capitol, marking the end of their ride.
