Japan's Coach Reflects on the Match

Hajime Moriyasu, the head coach of Japan, expressed his admiration for the team's fighting spirit after they managed to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening match of Group F at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite the commendable effort, Moriyasu conveyed his disappointment, as the Blue Samurai had aimed for a full three points.

A Thrilling Encounter in Arlington

The match, held in Arlington, Texas, showcased Japan's resilience as they came back from behind twice. Koki Ogawa's late equalizer was crucial in earning a point against one of the tournament's favorites. However, Moriyasu emphasized that the team's goal was to win.

Moriyasu remarked, "The Netherlands posed a significant challenge, and we were behind. The players united as one, demonstrating tenacity and fighting until the end." He added, "We are not entirely satisfied with just one point from the draw."

Match Highlights

Japan displayed a disciplined defense in the first half but fell behind shortly after halftime when Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk scored from a Ryan Gravenberch cross. Japan quickly responded with Keito Nakamura scoring a powerful equalizer.

The Netherlands regained the lead through a stunning goal by Crysencio Summerville, but Japan's determination shone through. Just two minutes before the final whistle, Ogawa's header, assisted by Daichi Kamada, found the net, igniting celebrations among Japanese fans.

Moriyasu's Thoughts on the Performance

Moriyasu praised his players for their composure under pressure and their belief in turning the game around. He stated, "It was challenging for them to fight back, but they remained tenacious, patient, and calm, seizing opportunities as they arose. I am proud of their ability to maintain their pace."

Despite acknowledging the team's determination, the 57-year-old coach reiterated that a draw was not the desired outcome. "We aimed for three points, not just one. From that perspective, it is somewhat disappointing," he concluded.

Looking Ahead

With this draw, Japan secures one point in their opening Group F match. They will face Tunisia next in Monterrey on June 20, while the Netherlands also starts their campaign with a draw.
