Israel Intensifies Military Operations in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered an escalation of military operations in Lebanon, commanding troops to advance further into the region. This move follows the capture of Beaufort Castle and comes amidst ongoing hostilities with Hezbollah, which has employed drones in the conflict. Despite a ceasefire declared weeks ago, the situation remains tense, with significant casualties reported on both sides. Netanyahu aims to strengthen Israel's control over areas previously held by Hezbollah, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict. Read on for a detailed overview of the latest developments.

Israeli Forces Advance into Lebanon

In a significant escalation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has commanded troops to advance deeper into Lebanon. This directive follows the capture of the historic Beaufort Castle and a key ridge in the southern region of the country. Despite a ceasefire that was declared over six weeks ago, the day witnessed one of the most intense exchanges of fire from Hezbollah towards northern Israel since the ceasefire, leading to school closures and heightened restrictions.

Netanyahu stated, "I instructed the military to expand its ground manoeuvre in Lebanon." Previously, Israeli forces had control extending to the Litani River, but they are now advancing towards the Zaharani River, approximately 10 kilometers further north. The occupation of Beaufort Castle has provided Israeli troops with a strategic advantage over much of southern Lebanon and northern Israel, facilitating attacks on Israeli residential areas. Netanyahu emphasized his goal to "deepen and expand our grip on the places that were under Hezbollah's control." This marks the first time Israel has held the site since its withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000 after an 18-year presence.

Netanyahu remarked, "We have broken the barrier of fear. We are taking the initiative, we are operating on all fronts - in Syria, in Gaza, in Lebanon."

Continued Hostilities and Casualties

Since the mid-April ceasefire, Israeli forces and Hezbollah have been engaged in ongoing skirmishes, with Hezbollah employing inexpensive kamikaze drones that pose challenges for air defense systems, resulting in casualties among Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. On Sunday, the military issued a new evacuation alert for residents in southern Lebanon, south of the Zaharani River.

The conflict has reportedly resulted in over 3,370 fatalities, as per the Lebanese government. In contrast, Israel has reported the deaths of 24 soldiers and four civilians during the same timeframe. Additionally, tens of thousands of residents in northern Israel have been displaced due to the threat of Hezbollah rockets and drones.
