Is Tehran Experiencing 'Oil Rain'? Disturbing Footage Sparks Global Concern
Alarming Scenes Emerge from Tehran
Tehran: Disturbing images and videos from Iran's capital have raised alarms online, depicting thick black smoke billowing over the city following reported Israeli airstrikes on fuel facilities.
Numerous clips shared on social media suggest that rain in certain areas of the city is mixed with a viscous, oil-like substance, leading to speculation about an unusual phenomenon dubbed 'oil rain.' In one widely circulated video, an individual highlights a dark, oily film on the ground, asserting that smoke from the fires has contaminated the air and settled across parts of Tehran.
The footage has garnered international attention, with many questioning the validity of such an occurrence.
Reports indicate that Israel conducted strikes on various fuel storage and oil facilities in and around Tehran on Saturday night. Iranian news outlets stated that the attacks targeted the Aghdasiyeh oil warehouse in northeast Tehran, the Shahran oil depot to the north, an oil refinery in southern Tehran, and an oil depot in the nearby city of Karaj. These strikes reportedly ignited significant fires at multiple sites.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society has cautioned that rainfall under these circumstances could contain harmful hydrocarbons, as well as sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Experts warn that these substances can lead to effects akin to acid rain, potentially causing respiratory issues and irritation to the eyes and skin.
Officials have urged residents to take necessary precautions. Tehran's governor has recommended that people remain indoors, wear masks if they must venture outside, and limit unnecessary travel.
Residents are also advised to keep windows and doors shut and cover them with damp cloths to minimize the infiltration of polluted air.
