Iran's Supreme Leader Promises Strong Naval Response Amid Tensions
Iran's Naval Readiness Highlighted
Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, has declared that the nation's navy is ready to deliver further "bitter defeats" to its adversaries. This statement was made public on Saturday, coinciding with a delicate ceasefire with the United States and Israel. In a message commemorating Iran's Armed Forces Day, shared on his Telegram account, Khamenei asserted, "Just as Iran's drones strike swiftly against the US and Zionist criminals, our courageous navy is also poised to deliver new bitter defeats to our enemies." These remarks come during a 10-day ceasefire between Iran and Israel, set to conclude on April 22.
Public Statements Amid Uncertainty
Khamenei, who took over leadership following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in a US-Israeli airstrike in February, has not made any public appearances since then. Reports indicate he may have sustained serious injuries in that attack. In his recent posts, he commended Iran's military forces, stating, "The Army is akin to the nation's child, emerging from the heart of the people's homes." He further emphasized, "The Islamic Republic of Iran's Army is now valiantly defending its land, waters, and flag." Khamenei also mentioned that Iran's forces are "standing alongside their comrades from other military branches, confronting the two leading armies of disbelief and arrogance," referring to the US and Israel.
Contrasting Views on Military Strength
These statements sharply contrast with comments made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Iran's military capabilities have been significantly diminished. Trump stated, "Their military is destroyed, their entire navy is underwater. One hundred fifty ships are gone, their navy is gone," during a press briefing on April 13. He added, "I believe Iran is in a very precarious situation. They seem quite desperate."
Escalating Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The situation is further complicated by rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global oil transport. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Saturday its intention to blockade the Strait, escalating the standoff with the United States. In a statement on Telegram, the IRGC's naval forces warned that any vessel approaching the Strait would be seen as cooperating with the enemy and would be targeted. They claimed, "In violation of the ceasefire agreement, the American enemy has not lifted the naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports. Therefore, starting this evening, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until this blockade is lifted." Trump had previously stated that US measures would "remain in full force," contributing to the uncertainty surrounding maritime security in the region. The situation remains tense as both parties hold firm while the ceasefire is in effect.
