Iran's Military Seizes Commercial Ships in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Bold Move in the Strait of Hormuz
Tehran: On Thursday, Iranian authorities released footage that allegedly depicts their military boarding and capturing a commercial container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. This video was shared by the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and shows masked soldiers climbing aboard the cargo vessel. Following this incident, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that they had seized two vessels in this critical maritime area on Wednesday, claiming that these ships were subsequently directed towards Iranian shores.
It is important to note that the Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, has seen increased military activity from the IRGC following US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran on February 28. The US has also enforced a naval blockade in the strait after initial negotiations with Iran faltered earlier this month. This vital waterway is responsible for 20% of the global trade in crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
In a related development, the US military reportedly intercepted several Iranian-flagged vessels on Wednesday as part of the ongoing naval blockade. According to sources from shipping and security, these tankers were redirected from their routes near India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. The vessels involved include the Iranian-flagged supertankers Deep Sea, Sevin, and Dorena. The US Central Command stated that the tanker Dorena was being escorted by a US Navy destroyer in the Indian Ocean as it allegedly attempted to breach the blockade.
Trump's Comments on Iran Negotiations: On Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump stated that there is "no pressure" to resume discussions with Iran. In an interview with a media channel, he refuted claims that the ceasefire had been extended for a brief period of "three to five" days, labeling such reports as "false." Trump's comments on the peace talks came a day after he announced an indefinite extension of the ceasefire. He emphasized that there is no specific timeline and no urgency, clarifying that the timeline for addressing the Iran situation is not connected to the upcoming mid-term elections. Trump asserted that his administration aims to secure a favorable agreement with Tehran that would benefit Americans.
Trump also highlighted his decision to impose a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming it is more effective than military strikes. He stated, "The blockade scares them even more than the bombing," adding that while Iran has faced bombings for years, they particularly dislike the blockade.
