Tehran: In light of the increasing tensions in the Middle East, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran made a pointed remark towards U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, utilizing his well-known phrases "you are fired" and "thank you for your kind attention." This statement came after Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC spokesperson remarked, "Hey, Trump, you’re fired. You are familiar with this sentence. Thank you for your attention to this matter," as reported by a local news outlet. The conflict has now entered its 24th day, with the IRGC effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz.


On Sunday, Trump had warned Iran to open the strait within 48 hours, threatening to target Iranian power plants if they failed to comply. He stated on Truth Social, "If Iran doesn't FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"


In response to Trump's threats, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted that the strait remains accessible to all, except those infringing on Iran's sovereignty. He emphasized, "The illusion of erasing Iran from the map shows desperation against the will of a history-making nation. Threats and terror only strengthen our unity. The Strait of Hormuz is open to all except those who violate our soil. We firmly confront delirious threats on the battlefield," he stated on his social media account.


Iran's New Toll on Shipping: Reports indicate that Iran has decided to impose a toll of USD 2 million (over 18 crore) for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. According to Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi, this toll has already been enacted, as reported by Iran International. The Strait of Hormuz is vital, handling approximately 20 percent of the global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.



Background of the Conflict: The ongoing conflict began on February 28, following airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has targeted Israeli cities and U.S. military installations in Gulf nations, as well as attacking oil facilities in neighboring Arab countries.
