Iran Vows Retaliation Against US Following Khamenei's Death

Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, has vowed to avenge the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed in a US-Israeli strike. Larijani's threats were met with indifference from President Trump, who dismissed the Iranian official and reiterated US military operations. Amidst these tensions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologized to neighboring countries while clarifying that Iran's focus remains on US military targets. As the conflict enters its ninth day, fears of a wider regional war grow, although diplomatic mediation efforts are reportedly underway. The situation remains volatile, with military actions expected to continue.

Iran's Strong Response

Ali Larijani, Iran's security chief, has declared that Tehran will seek vengeance for the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli operation. Larijani warned that US President Donald Trump would face consequences for this act, as tensions in the Middle East escalate. In an interview with Iranian state television, he emphasized that Iran would not let this incident go unpunished, stating, “We will not leave him alone. He must pay the price for what he did.” The attack on Khamenei, which occurred on February 28, has led to a series of retaliatory strikes across the region.

Larijani further expressed that Trump underestimated the situation, comparing it to his actions in Venezuela. He asserted that the killing of Khamenei and the loss of over 1,000 Iranian lives is a serious matter that will not be overlooked. In a post on social media, he reiterated Iran's commitment to retaliation.

Trump's Dismissive Reaction

Trump Responds

In response, Trump dismissed Larijani's threats, claiming he did not recognize him and expressing indifference to the comments. He characterized Iranian leaders as weak and losing their grip on power in the region. Trump reaffirmed that US military operations would persist and insisted on Iran's unconditional surrender.

Iran's Mixed Signals

Iran’s Mixed Messaging

On the same day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued an apology to neighboring nations for Iran's retaliatory actions, stating that Tehran did not intend to target other Gulf states unless provoked. However, he later clarified that Iran had not attacked its neighbors but focused on US military installations in the area. Trump's reaction to this was to label Iran as the 'loser of the Middle East.'

Ongoing Conflict

War Enters Day 9

These developments come as the conflict enters its ninth day following coordinated strikes by the US and Israel that resulted in Khamenei's death. This escalation has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict, prompting several Gulf nations to remain on high alert. Despite the tensions, Pezeshkian mentioned that diplomatic mediation efforts are underway, although he did not specify which countries are involved. Regional powers like Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, and Oman have offered to mediate since the onset of the conflict. Nevertheless, military actions continue, with the Israel Defense Forces indicating a new phase in their operations against Iran, and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggesting that American military involvement may escalate further.
