Iran Threatens Retaliation After Destruction of Key Bridge by US Airstrikes
Significant Escalation Following US Strikes
In a dramatic response to the recent US-led airstrikes that destroyed the B1 (Azimiyeh) Bridge in Karaj, Iran has indicated a significant escalation in tensions. The semi-official Fars News Agency in Iran has released a list of eight critical bridges in the Gulf region, suggesting a potential retaliatory action by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This list includes notable structures such as the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Sea Bridge in Kuwait, various bridges in the United Arab Emirates, and several others in Jordan, as reported by Anadolu.
Destruction of Iran's Major Infrastructure
According to reports from Iran's State TV, the B1 bridge was targeted multiple times, resulting in civilian casualties. The bridge, which was still under construction, was intended to connect Tehran with Karaj and was regarded as an engineering marvel, standing at 136 meters high. Footage from the scene depicted heavy smoke and the bridge's collapse.
US President Donald Trump shared images of the destruction on his social media platform, stating, “The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again - Much more to follow!” He urged Iran to negotiate before it was too late.
Trump has intensified the pressure, claiming that Iranian officials are seeking a ceasefire, a statement that Tehran has categorically denied. He emphasized that any potential truce would depend on the security of the Hormuz Strait, warning of increased military action if conditions are not met. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the notion of a ceasefire as mere speculation, asserting that hostilities would persist until the aggressors are held accountable.
