Transition of Power in Iran

Tehran: On Sunday, Ali Larijani, Iran's security chief, announced that the process of transitioning leadership after the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would begin later that day, as reported by state media.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, and a member of the Guardian Council, which plays a crucial role in aligning legislation with Sharia law and the Iranian Constitution, will oversee the nation during this transitional period, according to IRNA.

Larijani, who leads Iran's Supreme National Security Council and previously advised Khamenei, stated, "An interim leadership council will be established soon. The president, the judiciary head, and a jurist from the Guardian Council will take charge until a new leader is elected."

"We aim to form this council as quickly as possible, ideally today," he added during a state television interview.

Moreover, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf expressed that the country is prepared for "all scenarios" regarding the future following Khamenei's death, as per state media reports.

He also remarked that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have "crossed our red lines" and will "face the consequences."

Trump has issued a warning to Iran against military actions, threatening a response of unprecedented force.

"Iran has indicated they will strike hard today, harder than ever before. They should refrain from doing so, as we will respond with a force never seen before! Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump stated.

This announcement follows the Islamic Republic Guard Corps (IRGC) vowing to retaliate against the "murderers" of Supreme Leader Khamenei, promising a response that would be the "most ferocious offensive operation in history" against the US and Israel.

In a statement on its official Telegram account, the IRGC declared, "The Iranian nation's hand of revenge for a severe and decisive punishment against the murderers of the Imam of the Ummah will not relent."

The IRGC further stated that it, along with the Armed Forces and Basij forces, will "vigorously continue the path of their leader in defending his legacy, countering both internal and external threats, and delivering a lesson to aggressors against the Islamic homeland."

Additionally, the IRGC announced the initiation of the fifth wave of Operation True Promise 4, targeting American vessels in the region, including those in the Indian Ocean carrying ammunition and refueling tankers.
