Iran Declares US Naval Blockade Nullifies Diplomatic Agreement

Iran has declared that the recent US naval blockade has effectively nullified a diplomatic agreement aimed at reducing hostilities. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi criticized the US for violating its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He stated that Iran is no longer bound by the agreement and dismissed any possibility of future negotiations with the US. Additionally, Gharibabadi warned of Iran's intent to exercise full control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. This situation follows the resumption of US military operations against Iran, further complicating the already strained relations.

Iran Responds to US Naval Actions

On Tuesday, Iranian officials announced that the United States has effectively terminated a recently established agreement between the two nations by reinstating its naval blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas. Kazem Gharibabadi, the Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that this action has "completely dismantled" the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was designed to halt hostilities and foster an environment conducive to renewed diplomatic discussions.

Tehran Accuses Washington of Breach

In an interview with state media, Gharibabadi accused the US of failing to uphold its commitments under the MoU. He emphasized that the US's actions represent a significant violation, stating, "The United States came and violated all of its commitments under this Memorandum of Understanding." He further argued that merely labeling the action as a violation does not adequately reflect its gravity.

Iran No Longer Obligated by the MoU

Gharibabadi contended that the renewed blockade has rendered the agreement void, indicating that Iran is no longer bound to adhere to its terms. "The US has not merely violated the Memorandum of Understanding. With tonight's action, the MoU has been completely dismantled. Iran is no longer bound by the MoU," he asserted.

His comments followed confirmation from US Central Command (CENTCOM) that American forces had resumed operations targeting vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports. US officials reported the deployment of over 20 Navy warships and numerous military aircraft in the region. The US justified the renewed blockade as a response to recent military strikes aimed at diminishing Iranian capabilities that threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran Dismisses Future Negotiations

Gharibabadi ruled out any possibility of Iran seeking new negotiations with the US, stating, "Iran will never request negotiations with the United States." He also criticized US references to international law during the ongoing conflict, arguing that Washington has lost the right to invoke such principles after initiating military actions against Iran. "Talking about international law during wartime is a joke. They are the ones who attacked us. They cannot come teach us about international law," he remarked.

Control Over the Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister warned that Tehran intends to assert full control over the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict. While Iran and Oman typically share oversight of this crucial waterway, Gharibabadi stated that wartime conditions necessitate Iran's complete control for national security reasons. "We will exercise full sovereignty over the Strait, no matter the costs," he declared. These developments signify a further escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran following the breakdown of the ceasefire framework and the resumption of US military actions against Iran.
