Iran Asserts Control Over the Strait of Hormuz: What This Means for Global Shipping
Iran's Military Dominance in the Strait of Hormuz
Tehran: The spokesperson for Iran's military, Mohammad Akraminia, has declared that the nation's armed forces are firmly in control of the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that no vessel, whether friendly or adversarial, can navigate through this crucial waterway without their explicit consent.
Akraminia emphasized that controlling the Strait is an "inherent right" of Iran, which has not been actively enforced for several years, as reported by Iranian media.
"Currently, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps oversees the western section while the army manages the eastern part of the strait, ensuring that no ship can pass without our forces' authorization," he stated.
In a related development, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hamid Ghanbari noted that various nations are urgently reaching out to Iran via telexes and letters, requesting permission for their vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's firm grip on the Strait intensified on February 28, when it prohibited safe passage for ships linked to Israel and the United States following coordinated strikes on Iranian soil, according to reports.
On Thursday, Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei indicated that a "new chapter" is unfolding in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that a new "legal framework" would enhance management of the strait, benefiting all regional nations.
In a statement commemorating the National Day of the Persian Gulf, Khamenei highlighted the sacrifices made by Iran to maintain the independence of the region and to resist foreign aggression, describing the Islamic Revolution as a pivotal moment in this struggle.
"This strategic asset has historically attracted the greed of many aggressors. The history of invasions by European and American forces, along with the resulting insecurities and threats to regional countries, illustrates just a fraction of the global oppressors' malicious intentions against the peoples of the Persian Gulf," the message conveyed by Iran's Mehr news agency stated.
"The new legal framework and management system for the Strait of Hormuz will foster comfort and development for all nations in the region, with its economic advantages bringing joy to the people," Khamenei was quoted as saying.
He further asserted that the future of the Persian Gulf would be bright and "free from American influence," dedicated to progress, peace, and prosperity for its inhabitants.
