Investigation Underway Following Death of Convicted Murderer Jarvis Butts

Jarvis Butts, a convicted murderer, was found dead at a Michigan correctional facility, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of his death. Butts had pleaded guilty to the murder of 13-year-old Na'Ziyah Harris, who disappeared in January 2024. His death raises questions about the autopsy results and whether Na'Ziyah's remains have been located. The plea deal aimed to provide closure for her family, but with Butts' passing, the search for answers continues. The community awaits further developments in this tragic case.

Details Surrounding Jarvis Butts' Death

Jarvis Butts, aged 43, was discovered deceased on March 26 at the Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, situated approximately 75 miles west of Detroit and around 35 miles south of Lansing. The Michigan Department of Corrections confirmed his passing, with spokesperson Jenni Riehle stating that staff attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. Michigan State Police, along with corrections officials, have been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Riehle indicated that it may be a suicide, although an autopsy will ultimately clarify the cause and manner of death.

Background on Jarvis Butts

On February 12, Butts pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Na'Ziyah Harris, a 13-year-old girl from Detroit who disappeared in January 2024. He was sentenced on March 12, just two weeks prior to his death, receiving a prison term of 35 to 60 years for the murder. Additionally, he was given concurrent sentences of 10 to 15 years for five counts of criminal sexual conduct involving female victims aged between four and 13 years, as reported by the prosecutor's office. The Egeler facility serves as a temporary holding center for newly sentenced inmates before they are moved to their designated prisons. Unfortunately, Butts did not progress beyond this initial stage.

The Disappearance of Na'Ziyah Harris

Na'Ziyah Harris was last seen on January 9, 2024, when she exited a school bus on Detroit's east side, but she never returned home. Despite extensive investigations, her body had not been found by the time charges were brought against Butts.

Plea Deal Aimed at Providing Closure

A significant motivation behind the plea deal was to offer Na'Ziyah's family some closure. As part of the agreement, Butts was obligated to disclose truthful information regarding the location of her remains. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized this point after the sentencing, stating, "One of the most important aspects of the plea agreement was giving Na'Ziyah's family some semblance of closure. The disclosure of the location of her body was crucial." On March 26, prosecutor's office spokeswoman Maria Miller confirmed that officials were satisfied with Butts' information regarding the location, but did not confirm whether Na'Ziyah's body had been recovered.

Looking Ahead

With Butts' death, attention now turns to two unresolved issues: the results of his autopsy and whether Na'Ziyah Harris's remains have been found. Her family has been waiting for over a year for answers, and it appears that their search for closure continues.
