Colombo, August 5: On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Colombo for a brief visit, where he is set to engage with key leaders including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka announced on X that this visit aims to build upon the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two nations, reinforcing their close bilateral relationship and advancing significant initiatives.

In a related effort, India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, delivered 500 litres of Technical Malathion to Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa on Tuesday, demonstrating India's commitment to assist Sri Lanka in combating the dengue outbreak.

Jha expressed on X, "India stands with Sri Lanka in its fight against dengue. I am pleased to provide 500 litres of Technical Malathion as a gift from the Government and people of India to support the ongoing dengue control efforts in Sri Lanka."

During a review meeting on July 27, Jha highlighted that India's development assistance to Sri Lanka has surpassed USD 7.5 billion, impacting all 25 districts. This meeting was held alongside Sri Lanka's Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Anil Jayantha Fernando.

According to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, "With over USD 7.5 billion in aid, including more than USD 850 million in grants, India’s projects are transforming housing, healthcare, education, railways, energy, and livelihoods across all districts of Sri Lanka."

As Sri Lanka's closest neighbour, India shares a rich historical and civilizational bond with the island nation that spans over 2,500 years. The relationship is pivotal to India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiative, as stated by the Indian High Commission.

In 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant visit to Sri Lanka, marking the first visit by a foreign Head of State since President Dissanayake took office in 2024. During this visit, seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering various sectors including defence, health, mass media, energy, and connectivity.
