EAM Jaishankar's Visit to Dhaka
Dhaka: On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka to extend condolences to Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), following the death of his mother, Khaleda Zia, a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Upon his arrival, Jaishankar shared a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Rahman, expressing the Indian government's heartfelt condolences.
He stated, "I conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the government and people of India. I expressed confidence that Begum Khaleda Zia's vision and values will guide the development of our partnership."
Jaishankar also recognized Zia's significant contributions to democracy and expressed hope for enhanced India-Bangladesh relations in light of the upcoming elections.
Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, shared images of the meeting on X, noting Jaishankar's condolences and optimism for strengthening ties between the two nations following the democratic transition expected in February 2026.
Jaishankar's visit is primarily to represent India at Khaleda Zia's funeral, honoring her legacy as the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow over Zia's passing, recalling her as a historic figure whose impact on Bangladesh and its relationship with India will be remembered.
Thousands of mourners have gathered at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka to pay their respects since early morning.
Local media reports indicate that 27 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed throughout Dhaka to ensure security during this time.
Khaleda Zia, who served as Prime Minister three times and was a long-standing leader of the BNP, passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.
She had been hospitalized at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since November 23 due to serious heart and lung complications.
Reports indicate she was also suffering from pneumonia in her final days and had been under close medical supervision for 36 days, with her condition described as fragile.
Zia is set to be buried next to her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
