Indian Travelers to Germany: No More Transit Visa Required!
Significant Visa Policy Change for Indian Nationals
Berlin/New Delhi: The German Embassy in New Delhi has made an important announcement regarding travel for Indian citizens. Starting June 3, 2026, Indian nationals will no longer need a transit visa when passing through German airports on their way to other destinations.
This change was officially published in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on June 2, 2026. The decision is a direct outcome of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to India earlier this year, highlighting the German government's dedication to enhancing relations with India, easing travel, and bolstering economic connections.
During Chancellor Merz's visit, both he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the impressive growth in bilateral trade and investment, noting that trade between the two nations hit a record high in 2024, with positive trends continuing into 2025.
India and Germany have entered into numerous agreements spanning various sectors, including trade, technology, health, and renewable energy. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that 19 agreements were finalized, along with several policy initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation in strategic, economic, and interpersonal areas.
The leaders also expressed their strong support for the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), recognizing its potential to transform global trade, connectivity, and prosperity. They are looking forward to the inaugural IMEC ministerial meeting to take actionable steps towards this initiative.
Additionally, the leaders celebrated the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent to establish a Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, which aims to foster long-term collaboration in the defense sector, including technology partnerships and co-production of defense equipment. India has welcomed Germany's commitment to expedite export clearances for defense materials.
