Indian Fishermen Detained for Alleged Poaching in Sri Lankan Waters

In a recent incident, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended four Indian fishermen for allegedly poaching in its waters, leading to the seizure of their trawler. This event highlights ongoing tensions between India and Sri Lanka regarding fishing rights in the Palk Strait, a vital fishing area for both nations. The Navy has reported a significant number of arrests this year, raising concerns about illegal fishing activities and border disputes. The situation continues to evolve as both countries navigate their fishing rights and territorial waters.

Incident Involving Indian Fishermen

Colombo: The Sri Lankan Navy announced on Wednesday that four Indian fishermen have been apprehended, and their fishing vessel has been confiscated due to allegations of illegal fishing within Sri Lankan territorial waters.

According to a statement from Sri Lanka's North Central Naval Command, naval personnel observed a fleet of Indian fishing boats operating in their waters and took action to remove them from the vicinity of Mannar on Monday.

The Navy reported that a compliant boarding led to the capture of the Indian fishing boat and the arrest of the four fishermen who were found to be fishing illegally.

This year alone, the Navy has detained 18 fishing vessels and 128 Indian fishermen for similar offenses.

Earlier, on April 11, at least 12 Indian fishermen were also arrested, and their trawler was seized.

The issue of fishermen crossing borders has been a significant point of tension in India-Sri Lanka relations, with reports of the Sri Lankan Navy firing on Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats during various incidents.

The Palk Strait, which separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is known for its abundant fishing resources, attracting fishermen from both nations.

It is common for fishermen from both sides to be detained for accidentally entering each other's waters.
