India Stands in Solidarity with Indonesia Amidst Devastating Floods
Condolences from India's Consulate in Medan
Jakarta: The Consulate General of India in Medan expressed heartfelt condolences on Sunday to the Indonesian people affected by the recent floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
In a message shared on X, the consulate stated, "CGI Medan conveys deepest condolences for the tragic losses from floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra, and reaffirms solidarity and support to affected people and Provincial Governments. India Indonesia Mitra Selamanya."
Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Jakarta also expressed its sorrow over the loss of life and property due to the natural disasters in the same regions, reaffirming its support for the Indonesian people.
The embassy's post on X read, "The Embassy of India in Jakarta expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences for the tragic loss of life and property caused by the devastating floods and landslides in Aceh, North and West Sumatra, and reaffirms solidarity and support for the Government and those affected at this difficult moment."
This statement from the Indian mission follows reports from Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) indicating that 303 individuals have lost their lives, with 279 still unaccounted for after the flash floods and landslides impacted three provinces.
During a press briefing, BNPB Chief Suharyanto revealed that the majority of casualties occurred in North Sumatra, where 166 people have died and 143 are missing. In West Sumatra, 90 fatalities have been reported, with 85 individuals still unaccounted for. Aceh has recorded 47 deaths and 51 missing persons, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Suharyanto led a coordination meeting with BNPB units deployed in the hardest-hit areas, emphasizing the need to ramp up operations as weather conditions begin to improve.
He highlighted three immediate priorities: conducting search and rescue missions for the missing, restoring communication networks, and ensuring the rapid delivery of essential supplies to those affected by the floods and landslides.
