India Issues Advisory for Ships in the Persian Gulf Amid Iranian Tensions
Advisory for Indian Ships
New Delhi: The Indian government has released a new advisory for its vessels stationed in the Persian Gulf, urging them to avoid the area near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The advisory clearly states that Indian-flagged ships should only attempt to navigate through this region if they receive explicit instructions from the Indian Navy.
This advisory follows an incident on Saturday where Iranian Revolutionary Guards fired upon two Indian vessels in the Hormuz Strait. According to reports, this measure aims to ensure the safety of Indian ships. Sources indicate that the Indian Navy is prioritizing the security of all Indian vessels awaiting passage through the Strait.
Location of Larak Island
Larakh Island is situated off the coast of Iran near Bandar Abbas. It lies in the southern part of the Hormuz Strait, which is the narrowest section of the waterway, making it easier for Iran to control. The island is located approximately 33 kilometers south of Hormuz and hosts significant oil infrastructure crucial to Iran's energy sector. The area is heavily monitored by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, allowing them to keep a close watch on vessels passing through.
Reports suggest that several Iranian bases operate from this location, and small, fast boats can be deployed to target any passing ships effectively.
Ships to Proceed Only After Navy Approval
So far, 11 Indian vessels have successfully navigated through the Strait. The last tanker to depart was the 'Desh Garima' on April 18, 2026. On the same day, Iranian guards fired upon the Indian ships 'Sanmar Herald' and 'Jag Arnav,' forcing them to retreat. After exiting Hormuz, 'Desh Garima' was escorted by the Indian Navy for added security.
'Desh Garima' is expected to reach Mumbai by April 22. The advisory against passing near Larak Island means that the exit through Hormuz is currently uncertain. Until the Indian Navy grants clearance, these vessels will remain anchored in the Persian Gulf.
14 Indian Ships Remain in the Gulf
Currently, 14 Indian ships are still in the Persian Gulf. The Indian Navy is in constant communication with the crews of these vessels. To ensure their safety, seven Indian Navy ships are deployed in the vicinity.
For those Indian ships that manage to cross the Hormuz Strait, the Indian Navy provides escort services to guide them safely back to Indian waters, ensuring their secure arrival at Indian ports.
