India Initiates Operation Amistad to Aid Earthquake-Stricken Venezuela
Humanitarian Mission Launched
India has commenced Operation Amistad, a humanitarian initiative aimed at providing assistance to Venezuela, which has been severely impacted by a recent earthquake. The mission includes the dispatch of relief supplies, a medical team from the Indian Army, and a sophisticated modular field hospital. Two C-17 Globemaster aircraft from the Indian Air Force have taken off for Venezuela, making a stop in Abidjan, and are carrying approximately 35 tonnes of essential relief materials, along with an Army Field Hospital team and two BHISHM Cubes to aid those affected by the earthquake in northern Venezuela.
The medical team consists of 41 members, including nine medical officers, who are equipped to deliver emergency medical services, manage trauma cases, perform life-saving surgeries, and provide essential healthcare in disaster-stricken regions. They are also bringing along around six tonnes of medical supplies and humanitarian aid from the Ministry of External Affairs.
A significant aspect of this mission is the introduction of the BHISHM Cube (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita & Maitri) as part of India's Aarogya Maitri Project. This innovative, quickly deployable modular medical facility is specifically designed for humanitarian emergencies and disaster response. It can be set up as a fully functional field hospital capable of treating up to 200 patients, equipped with portable ventilators, patient monitoring systems, diagnostic tools, surgical instruments, oxygen support, and power generation capabilities.
This advanced medical setup allows healthcare professionals to provide emergency trauma care, perform critical surgeries, and offer intensive care in remote or disaster-affected areas. The government emphasized that the launch of Operation Amistad highlights India's ongoing dedication to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), showcasing its readiness to provide timely support to allied nations in times of need.
