Yangon (Myanmar), August 19: A new Small Development Project (SDP) aimed at constructing a warehouse in Yangon for disaster relief materials was launched, alongside the groundbreaking ceremony for a preschool building in Naypyitaw, as reported by the Indian Embassy in Yangon.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the 'Construction of warehouse in Dagon Myothit District, Yangon' was signed by Ambassador Abhay Thakur and U Zaw Lin, Director General of the Ministry of Border Affairs, in the presence of Lt. General Phone Myat, Union Minister for Border Affairs, during a ceremony in Naypyitaw.

Senior officials from both the Myanmar government and the Indian Embassy were present at the event.

This SDP initiative will see the construction of a two-story reinforced concrete warehouse at the District Development Supervisory Office in Dagon Myothit District, specifically designed for storing disaster relief materials.

Additionally, the groundbreaking ceremony for a two-story pre-primary education facility, part of the SDP for 'Construction of Preschool at Lewe Township, Naypyitaw', took place at the project site in Naypyitaw.

The event was led by Myanmar's Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Dr. Thant Zaw Lwin, alongside Ambassador Abhay Thakur and other officials from both governments. An MoU for this project was signed on April 9 during the visit of Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh.

The preschool project aims to enhance early childhood education infrastructure in the region by constructing a two-story reinforced concrete building in Lewe Township, Naypyitaw.

The Indian Embassy noted that the framework MoU for Indian Grant Assistance for implementing Small Development Projects, valued at up to USD two million each, was originally signed on July 27, 2010, and is valid until July 2030.

Under this framework, the Government of India has provided grant assistance for various initiatives, including a hospital in Monywa, computer and agricultural machinery supplies in Rakhine State, support for Home Science schools across multiple states, and the construction of simulator-based training facilities for seafarers in Yangon.

The Indian Embassy reaffirmed the Government of India's commitment to supporting High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP) and Small Development Projects (SDP) in Myanmar.
