India and Italy Elevate Ties to Special Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a significant upgrade in the relationship between India and Italy, designating it as a Special Strategic Partnership. This move aims to enhance cooperation and trade, with a target of reaching 20 billion euros. During a joint press conference with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, both leaders expressed their commitment to revitalizing ties that have been dormant for decades. Modi drew cultural parallels between Rome and Varanasi, while Meloni highlighted the historic nature of this visit. This partnership is set to pave the way for a more robust collaboration between the two nations.
 

Strengthening India-Italy Relations

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the relationship between India and Italy has been elevated to a Special Strategic Partnership. During a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Modi expressed his enthusiasm for this upgrade, stating, "I am pleased to announce that we are enhancing the India-Italy relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership." He elaborated that the "India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029" aims to provide a practical and forward-looking framework for their collaboration. Modi noted that trade between the two nations is on track to reach a target of 20 billion euros, with over 400 Italian firms actively contributing to India's economic development.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his appreciation to PM Meloni for the warm reception given to him and his delegation in Rome. He drew a comparison between Rome and his own constituency, Varanasi, remarking, "Rome is often referred to as the Eternal City, and Varanasi is similarly regarded as a timeless cultural hub. The connection between our two cultures naturally fosters warmth and camaraderie."

Meloni's Remarks on the Bilateral Ties

In her address during the joint press conference, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni remarked, "It is a privilege to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his delegation to Rome on what I believe is a historic day for our nations' relations." She acknowledged Modi's leadership since 2014 and highlighted that this marks his first bilateral visit to Italy. Meloni pointed out that the last Indian Prime Minister to undertake a bilateral mission to Italy was in 2000, 26 years ago. She emphasized that this visit not only bridges that long gap but also signifies a mutual commitment to rejuvenate their relationship, stating, "This visit represents the culmination of a determined effort to elevate our ties to unprecedented heights."
