Harish Rana: India's First Passive Euthanasia Patient Passes Away After 13-Year Battle
Harish Rana's Journey Ends
New Delhi/Ghaziabad, March 25, 2026 – Harish Rana, the first individual in India to receive approval for passive euthanasia, has passed away following a 13-year struggle. He took his last breath at 4:10 PM on Tuesday at the AIIMS hospital in Delhi. His cremation took place at 9 AM on Wednesday at the Green Park crematorium in South Delhi, attended by family and friends in a somber atmosphere.
At just 31 years old, Harish was a resident of Ghaziabad. In 2013, while studying engineering at Punjab University, he fell from a fourth-floor balcony, resulting in severe head injuries that left him in a permanent vegetative state for the past 13 years. He had been bedridden, battling bedsores and other complications.
On March 11, 2026, the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling allowing passive euthanasia based on a petition filed by Harish's parents. Subsequently, he was transferred to the palliative care unit at AIIMS on March 14, where life-support systems were gradually removed, leading to his peaceful passing.

Tears filled the eyes of family members. His father shared a message on WhatsApp stating, "The last rites will be conducted at 9 AM at Green Park, South Delhi... he is now in a happier place." This message brought tears to many attendees.
In accordance with his wishes, Harish donated his corneas and heart valves. The family completed the organ donation process, hoping that his death could bring new life to others.
