Global Oil Prices Surge Past $100 Amid Iran-US Tensions
Oil Prices Spike Following Iran's Stance
Mumbai: On Thursday, global oil prices surged past the $100 mark per barrel after Iran clarified that it is not directly negotiating with the United States to resolve ongoing conflicts.
Brent crude futures increased by 1.21% to reach $103.46 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a rise of 1.35%, hitting $91.54 per barrel, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that communications between Tehran and Washington via intermediaries should not be misconstrued as negotiations, and Tehran is likely to dismiss a ceasefire proposal backed by the US.
Previously, international crude oil prices had experienced a significant drop on Wednesday, fueled by rising optimism regarding a potential ceasefire in the West Asia region.
Experts suggest that the recent fluctuations in crude prices could provide some relief to India's economic indicators, such as inflation and the Current Account Deficit (CAD), although technical indicators indicate that critical support levels are being tested.
For India, a $10 per barrel change in crude oil typically affects the CAD by 0.3 to 0.5 percentage points of GDP and increases CPI inflation by 20 to 30 basis points, depending on the pass-through effect.
In a related development, Iran announced that it would not impose restrictions on vessels from five 'friendly' nations, including India, allowing them to navigate through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, while access remains limited for others.
Alongside India, ships from Russia, China, Pakistan, and Iraq have been granted safe passage through this vital maritime chokepoint, despite the ongoing regional conflict.
Conversely, vessels associated with countries perceived as adversaries or involved in the current conflict will be denied passage. Ships from the United States, Israel, and certain Gulf nations implicated in the crisis will not receive clearance to transit through the strait.
