Former Arcadia Mayor Pleads Guilty to Acting as an Illegal Agent for China

Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has pleaded guilty to charges of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. This shocking case has raised concerns about foreign influence in local politics. Wang admitted to collaborating with her former fiancé to promote pro-China propaganda through a website targeting the Chinese American community. With sentencing set for October 6, she faces a potential prison term of up to 10 years. The FBI has issued a stern warning regarding foreign interference in U.S. democracy, emphasizing that individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments will be prosecuted. Wang's political career, which began with her election to the city council in 2022, has come to a dramatic end following these revelations.

Eileen Wang's Guilty Plea

Eileen Wang, who previously served as the mayor of Arcadia, California, entered a federal courtroom on Friday and admitted guilt to charges of functioning as an unauthorized agent for the People's Republic of China. This development concludes a case that has left the Southern California community in disbelief. Wang, aged 56, was indicted earlier this month by the Department of Justice for one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government. She opted to plead guilty shortly after the announcement of the charges. Her sentencing is set for October 6, where she could face a maximum of 10 years in prison.

In her plea agreement, Wang acknowledged collaborating with her former fiancé, Yaoning "Mike" Sun, who also played a role in her campaign, to disseminate pro-Chinese propaganda via a platform named U.S. News Center. This website claimed to serve the local Chinese American audience. From 2020 to 2022, Wang and Sun operated under the guidance of the Chinese government, working with individuals in the U.S. to advance its agenda. They published pro-China articles on the site, including content provided through a WeChat thread, an encrypted messaging service, which Wang distributed to various contacts.
