FBI Arrests Punjab Gangster Nitish Kaushal in Major Crime Crackdown
Gangster Arrested in Operation Hard Ball
Nitish Kaushal, a gangster from Punjab and alleged member of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organized Crime Group (OCG), has been apprehended by the FBI in Vermont. This arrest comes shortly after the initiation of Operation Hard Ball, a comprehensive effort by U.S. authorities to dismantle transnational criminal networks associated with India. The FBI confirmed Kaushal's capture on Thursday, marking a significant step in reducing the number of fugitives linked to a major federal indictment targeting the Bishnoi Gang, Bhagwanpuria Gang, and Dhanda Gang.
U.S. officials report that 34 individuals have been charged in relation to these three organized crime groups. Prior to his arrest, Kaushal was one of 11 suspects who had managed to evade capture or remained outside U.S. jurisdiction.
Charged with RICO Conspiracy, an arrest warrant for Kaushal was issued on June 25 by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Prosecutors allege that he played an active role in the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria OCG, which began in Punjab and has since extended its reach globally. The FBI claims this organization is involved in a range of criminal activities, including murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, extortion, weapons trafficking, money laundering, and human smuggling. The bureau has stated that Kaushal engaged in violent acts on behalf of the group, including kidnappings and assaults.
U.S. prosecutors have warned that several defendants, including Kaushal, may face mandatory minimum sentences of 10 years to life imprisonment, with a maximum possible sentence of life in federal prison if found guilty.
Kaushal's arrest is part of Operation Hard Ball, one of the largest U.S. initiatives aimed at dismantling organized crime groups originating from Punjab, India. The investigation targets criminal organizations allegedly operating in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Investigators assert that these groups have established extensive international networks involved in violent crime, drug trafficking, and financial crimes.
The U.S. Department of Justice notes that the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Gang was established by the imprisoned Punjab gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is currently incarcerated in India. Initially a close ally of Lawrence Bishnoi, Bhagwanpuria later became one of his main adversaries. U.S. authorities estimate that the Bhagwanpuria organization has over 1,000 members and associates globally, with more than 100 operating within the United States.
Federal investigators also allege that the Bhagwanpuria network collaborated with corrupt officials in India to conduct extortion operations targeting victims abroad. One notable case involves Punjab Police officer Gurinderjit Singh, accused of acting as an associate of the gang in an alleged attempt to extort around $400,000 from a family based in Los Angeles.
The FBI has not disclosed when Kaushal will appear in federal court. Investigations related to Operation Hard Ball are ongoing, with authorities actively searching for the remaining fugitives named in the indictment.
