Pakistani Airstrikes Target Kabul

Reports indicate that Pakistani fighter jets conducted airstrikes in central Kabul, igniting fires and producing thick smoke over the Afghan capital. The aircraft were seen targeting various locations within the city, coinciding with rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Afghan government, asserted that the strikes hit a drug rehabilitation facility, resulting in casualties among patients receiving care. He condemned the assault as a breach of Afghan airspace and labeled it a crime against humanity.

This airstrike is reported to occur as hostilities between the two nations enter their third week. Afghan officials have reported that recent Pakistani shelling in Khost Province resulted in the deaths of four civilians, including three children. Mortar shells reportedly struck the Nari village in the Gurbuz district and another residential area, while a separate incident in Nuristan Province also resulted in civilian casualties.

According to Afghan authorities, at least 18 civilians have lost their lives in cross-border confrontations over the past week. The intensifying violence has led to the displacement of thousands, prompting the World Food Programme to mobilize emergency food aid for over 20,000 families affected by the ongoing conflict. Tensions escalated after Afghanistan allegedly conducted cross-border attacks in retaliation for earlier Pakistani airstrikes that Kabul claimed resulted in civilian deaths. In response, China has intervened to mediate, with special envoy Yue Xiaoyong engaging in discussions with both parties and advocating for an immediate ceasefire.
