Escalating Tensions: Gulf Nations Face Missile and Drone Attacks Amid Ceasefire
Missile and Drone Strikes Rock Gulf Nations
In a troubling development, several Gulf countries reported new missile and drone assaults shortly after a ceasefire was declared between Iran and the United States. The United Arab Emirates confirmed that its air defense systems were actively engaged in intercepting incoming threats from Iran. The Defence Ministry indicated that the explosions heard across various regions were due to the interception of both ballistic and cruise missiles, along with unmanned aerial vehicles.
Operations at the Habshan gas complex in Abu Dhabi were temporarily halted after debris from the interceptions ignited a fire early Wednesday. Authorities reported injuries to two Emiratis and one Indian national as a result of the incident.
Kuwait also experienced a surge of Iranian drone activity, with military officials stating that several drones targeted critical infrastructure, including oil facilities, power stations, and water desalination plants. The Defence Ministry characterized these strikes as 'intense hostile attacks,' noting that 28 drones were intercepted, although some caused considerable damage to infrastructure.
In Bahrain, debris from intercepted drones resulted in injuries to two individuals and damage to homes in the Sitra area. Explosions were reported in the capital, Manama, with smoke visible rising from Sitra Island, which is home to significant energy facilities. Authorities confirmed that a fire broke out at a targeted site but was subsequently brought under control, as reported by a media outlet.
Iranian state media claimed that these strikes were a response to earlier attacks on its oil facilities. Despite the rising tensions, there remains a cautious optimism that the ceasefire may still hold. Analysts speculate that the ongoing attacks could stem from a lack of unified command within Iran's military rather than a deliberate shift in policy.
Additionally, Iranian media reported a fire at an oil refinery on Lavan Island following an attack, with explosions also noted on Sirri Island. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in these incidents.
The ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran was established just before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump. In recent weeks, Gulf nations have endured a series of Iranian strikes targeting energy infrastructure, amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli military actions that began in late February.
