Eid-ul-Fitr Brings Temporary Truce Between Pakistan and Afghanistan Amidst Rising Tensions

Temporary Ceasefire Announced

Kabul: In a significant development, Pakistan and Afghanistan have declared a 'temporary pause' in their hostilities coinciding with the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. This decision follows appeals from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, despite ongoing tensions after Kabul accused Islamabad of a deadly strike that resulted in numerous casualties.

The announcement was made by Pakistan’s Information Minister Ataullah Tarar via a post on X, shortly after reports emerged of new strikes targeting alleged Taliban positions near the border.

Tarar stated that the ceasefire would be effective from 'midnight March 18/19 to midnight March 23/24', initiated both on Pakistan's own accord and at the request of the aforementioned Islamic nations. However, he warned that operations would resume immediately if there were any cross-border attacks, drone strikes, or terrorist activities within Pakistan.

In response, Afghan government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed that Afghanistan's security forces would also halt their defensive operations during the Eid festivities, adhering to similar requests from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar.

Nonetheless, Mujahid emphasized that Afghanistan would not shy away from retaliating if provoked, asserting that the nation would 'respond courageously to any aggression in the event of a threat.'

This ceasefire announcement follows a day after the Taliban-led government accused Pakistan of executing a devastating attack in Kabul. Deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat claimed that the bombardment on a drug rehabilitation center in the Afghan capital resulted in at least 400 fatalities and around 250 injuries.

On Wednesday, Afghanistan conducted a mass funeral for the victims of this incident, which garnered significant attention and condemnation.

During the funeral, Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani condemned the strike as 'a highly despicable and lowly act against humanity and Islamic principles,' according to reports from Tolo News.

Despite the temporary ceasefire, the atmosphere remains tense, with both nations indicating their readiness to respond to any further escalation.
